My Garden has Grown!!!

My Garden has grown, I now have 3 Tomato plants in total, 6 Roly Poly Carrot plants, 2 Red Capsicum plants, and 6 Lettuce Plants. I have really started my journey, and have just spent the last hour doing some maintenance on my plants.

So far so good.

My garden has started

I have started my garden with a Sweet 100 Tomato plant.

This plant will produce around 100 small cherry tomatoes.

I planted it a few weeks ago, I do not have a picture of what it looked like then but here is a picture of what it looks like now:

Since last year in Mr Woody's class I have wanted to start growing things in my own little garden.

Though this year I have talked multiple times with my parents about the idea of having a vege garden. They have both agreed that it would be a good idea but also the idea was raised that I might not stick with my garden and everything would go to waste. So I am starting off small to see if I will stick with it or not. I am hoping by the middle of next year that I will have a large raised garden around the side of our house.

Stress!

Stress is a very powerful thing.

It can make you think irrationally, and it can come so often.

I'm not very good at dealing with stress, and Mr Jones's class hasn't helped with that, having so much pressure to do well.

America wanted change and from 6:00 am NST Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States and the first African-American President.

His oath was muddled up a bit, but his speech made up for it.

There were great lines in his speech like:

"Starting today we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the work of remaking America"

and

"On this day we gather because we have chosen hope over fear"

Last year was brilliant,

John Key won the election,

Barack Obama has become the first African-American to be a president elect,

V8 Supercars came to Hamilton,

The Olympics were in Beijing, China, what a party that was,

But most of all I was in Mr. Woody's class.

My real question is,

What will this year hold in store for us?

Remeber 2008 was last year, it is already written in rock,

but 2009 is the present and it is still being written, anything is possible,

and all doors are open.

On Saturday it was polling day.

2,979,366 people were enrolled to vote. Did you know if you are over 18 years of age you have to be enrolled to vote but this doesn't mean you have to vote.

Over the 6 months of electioneering the One News Polls were against Labour showing that National could take it out. Well this is what they did. Once all the votes were counted and Winston Peters had made his "I'll be back speech" it showed that there would be a John Key lead government.

This is how the percentages went:

National 45.5% (59 seats)

Labour 33.8% (43 seats)

The Green Party 6.5% (8 seats)

Act 3.7% (5 seats)

Maori 2.3% (5 seats)

United Future 0.9 % (1 seat)

Progressive Party 0.9% (1 seat)

Bill & Ben Party just over 0.5% (0 seats)

Nz First OUT (0 seats)

Some of the big surprises of the 2008 elections are:

Helen Clark stepping down from the role of the leader of the Labour Party

Winston Peters not getting Tauranga and not getting into parliament

So all and all it was a clean win to National.

Orangutans!

In class yesterday we had a discussion about Palm Oil and Orangutans. On this post you will be able to discuss your points of views and ask questions which hopefully I will be able to answer.

This primate is now only found in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Orangutan fossils have been found in Vietnam, China and Java but now sadly no Orangutans live in the wild in these places now.

Black Belt!

On Saturday I graded for my black belt in Kenpo Karate.

Guess what, I got it!

The best Kenpo artist in the world was there as well as black belts from Australia and around New Zealand.

The grading took 3 hours. I have been doing Kenpo for 6 years.

So now I've made the first step to becoming an adult black belt, well so GL would say.

My 2008 South Island Trip!

On the last Friday in Term 3 I set off with my family on a trip all around the South Island.

We stayed 15 nights in 12 different places.

We spent 67 hours and 49 minutes travelling in the car.

We did 4651 kilometres.

We used 471.3 litres of petrol.

I will tell you the best thing I did each day.

Picton- Slept (we got off the interislander at 11pm and left for Nelson at 9:30

It's All Over Rover!

Well the 2008 Olympic games are over France grabbing the last gold medal in the sport of handball. The closing ceremony was just as amazing as the opening ceremony.

The job has now been handed over to London for the 2012 Olympic games.

Over all the medals given to athletes the country that came out on top was the host nation China. New Zealand finishing 26th on the medal table with 3 golds, 1 silver and 5 bronze.

Ben Fouhy Grabs 4th Place!

Despite a strong finish, Ben Fouhy has finished fourth in the K1 1000 final.
Fouhy, a silver medallist at Athens, was typically slow out of the blocks and was 5th place at the 500 metre stage but failed to catch the leaders.

Disastor For USA In 4x100 Metre Running Relay!

The US men's 4 x100 metres relay team failed to qualify for the Olympic final after dropping the baton in their heat on Thursday, then later on the USA's woman's 4x100 metre relay team also fail to make the final by dropping their baton as well.

Bummer On The BMX Course!

We had two competitors in. One in the men's and one in the womans.

Marc Willers sadly missed out on getting into the final while Sarah Walker came agonisingly close, but ultimately finished just out of the medals in the women's BMX final in Beijing.
The New Zealander finished fourth by just .13 of a second in a spectacular final on a sweltering hot morning at Lao Shan BMX stadium.

Tom Ashley Wins New Zealand's Third Gold!

New Zealand windsurfer Tom Ashley has won New Zealand's third gold of the Beijing Olympics in the RS-X discipline.

Nick Willis Wins Bronze For Kiwis!

The bronze medal dramatically achieved by Nick Willis on Wednesday continues a remarkable legacy in the Olympic 1500m.
Later on Wednesday afternoon the 25-year-old will become the sixth New Zealander to stand on the podium for this blue riband event.

Kiwi Mens Pursuit Team Win Bronze!

The Kiwi men's pursuit combination has collected the third bronze for New Zealand after easily beating Australia in the third place play-off.
They were able to gradually extend their lead through out the 4000 metre race and eventually finished 1.230 seconds ahead of their trans-Tasman rivals.

Yesterday New Zealand won our first medal with Mahe Drysdale winning bronze in the Mens Single Sculls. Through all his illness he still made it to the final and gave it everything.

My Dog Ben!

This speech is about my dog Ben. Have you ever lost a pet? Well I have. Ben was my 14 year old boxer dog which sadly we had to put down on Thursday the 5th of July 2007. He was all brown except for the fluffy white patch on his neck. One of the reasons we put him down was because he was so dependent on us because he needed help to walk, (not to mention he was deaf also) .He was a jolly little guy but sadly he had hip dysplasia and had had multiple tumours and finally he didn’t have any control of his bladder. It sounds pretty sad and it was but we believe it was the right thing to do. He was a very comforting dog and had been in our family all my life. We also have another dog who gave Ben so much grief by growling at times at Ben and sometimes even trying to tear him apart. With his amazingly kind hearted nature he didn’t fight back, so we had to help Ben all the time. Every time we got a ball out for Ben to play with he would go running along to get it which made us think he was a puppy again. My grandparents also had 2 boxer dogs both didn’t make it past the age of 10 which is the average age for a boxer dog. When my sister and I were young we would play with Ben all the time and he would never mind. So we thought he had a pretty good life and had had fun all the time (except for when Flick, our other dog, was attacking Ben). What would you have done if your dog had all these problems? Would you put him down? But was it the right decision? It may not have been because you never know when your pet is going to pass away and some problems may have just been temporary. So what would you do in this situation? It’s really hard to make the decision but it has to be made. If you have been through a similar situation you would know how it felt. If you haven’t been through a similar situation and you have a pet then spend as much time with your pet as you can. Eventually your pet will pass away or the time will come for you to maybe have to put your pet down.

Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England.

Charles is famous for his theory of evolution.

From 1831 to 1836 Darwin was as naturalist aboard the H.M.S Beagle on a British science expedition around the world.In South America Darwin found fossils of extinct animals that are similar to modern species. On the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean he noticed a lot of the fossils that were found were of the same general type as those in South America.

On the expidition the scientist onboard the H.M.S Beagle traveled all over the world. Wherever they went Darwin studied animals and plants and collected specimens for further study.

"Upon his return to London Darwin conducted thorough research of his notes and specimens. Out of this study grew several related theories: one, evolution did occur; two, evolutionary change was gradual, requiring thousands to millions of years; three, the primary mechanism for evolution was a process called natural selection; and four, the millions of species alive today arose from a single original life form through a branching process called “speciation"."

Darwin's theory's changed many religious peoples beliefs. Writers used Darwin's theories to support their own theories about society.

His life ended sadly in 1882.

Pond scum or better known as algae.

You've heard of solar cars and electric cars but have you heard of algae cars.

Yes that's right algae cars.
Glen Kertz says he can produce pond scum very quickly.

He says it will make a new bio fuel.

The fuel will be cheaper, green and better for the environment than oil.

He says if he took a 10th of the size of the state Texas he would be able to make enough algae constantly to satisfy Americas fuel needs for a year.

This new fuel will take between 5-10 years to be a worldwide fuel.

Just take minute to remember Derek Lovell.

He was a brave man who put his life towards his job and saving others.

That is a 1938 fire engine that is carrying Derek.

The procession started at the Hamilton fire station.

Massive Tamahere Cooling Factory Fire!

This is a photo of the Ice Pack factory's smoke.

This photo was taken before it had been said on the news.

The Ice Pack factory had a small fire the there was an explosion.

This disaster happened out at Tamahere.

There is around 20 firetrucks and lots more firefighters.

Waikato Hospital is now refusing more paitents.

The Green Grass Is Back!

If you are like my family you love green grass.

With the drought the grass all went brown and dirty.

For a little while nobody was allowed to water their grass.

Imagine if everyone still watered their grass.

The river would be so low.

The river would be dirty.

But thanks to everyone who didn't water their lawns.

In my family we just waited and waited and finally the water came.

The grass is now green still not as green as Australia but green enough.

I'm wondering if you guys didn't water your lawns.

If you can think of more consequences please comment.

This Graffiti is seen at the Hamilton University.

This shows real talent from the person who drew it.

It is on a big blank wall making the wall a bit more colourful.

Wow one of Hamilton's major events is really close, yes the Hamilton 400.

But this has cost 8 MILLION DOLLARS. Where there are somethings that need to happen like putting a underpass under Cobham Drive. All Hamilton's money is going on events. I'm not against the events but there are things that need to be DONE!

Animals are a lot of trouble but are also very fun.

If you have a dog like I did where it had lots of problems it can be very sad.

The Beach!

I love the beach it's a cool place to go swimming (even if there may be sharks).
Or if you go there just to walk on the beach listening to the waves.

Maybe you go fishing or just relax on the beach.

Whether you boggie board or surf on the waves.

You might go diving or kayaking.

But whatever you do the beach is a cool place.

What can you do to help?

Here are a few tips:

Take 5 minute showers (or even less).
RECYCLE remember to recycle if your parents forget, remind them or do it yourself.
Plant trees if your backyard is just grass, convince your parents to buy some trees to plant in the backyard or to put the plants in pots.
Get rid of scraps by making a worm farm or compost bin.
Use energy efficient light bulbs.
Turn off the lights in a room if you have finished using the lights.
Only use air conditioning in the car and at home if it is totally nesseccary. Sometimes you only need to wind down the window or open some doors.
Only use the dishwasher if it is full.
Play outside instead of sitting indoors using up energy eg; television.
Use toilet paper made from recycled paper and less for each wipe.
